Statement from Ted Falk, MP for Provencher

“Last week I called on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to reconsider his refugee resettlement plan. I believe that the Prime Minister’s intention to bring 25,000 refugees to Canada, by his self-imposed and arbitrary year-end deadline, was an unrealistic goal that would undermine our screening processes.

The federal government must always balance Canada’s security with our humanitarian compassion.

During the federal election campaign, Conservatives were proposing a more realistic plan. I applaud the Liberal Government for rethinking their unrealistic deadline and taking a step in the right direction.”

« La semaine dernière, j’ai exhorté le premier ministre Justin Trudeau à revoir son plan de réinstallation des réfugiés. J’estime que l’intention du premier ministre d’accueillir au Canada 25 000 réfugiés d’ici la fin de l’année, une échéance arbitraire qu’il s’était lui-même imposée, était irréaliste et aurait compromis nos processus de sélection.

Le gouvernement fédéral doit toujours établir un équilibre entre la sécurité du Canada et nos efforts humanitaires.

Pendant la campagne électorale, les conservateurs avaient proposé un plan plus réaliste. Je félicite le gouvernement libéral d’avoir revu son échéance irréaliste et fait un pas dans la bonne direction. »
